Carvoeiro is calm and uncrowded in winter, so it's easy to focus, with the beach a few minutes' walk away for when you're done for the day. You're within walking distance of cafés, restaurants and the beach, and the rest of the Algarve is an easy drive. Mild winters, 300+ days of sun a year, and a pace that's hard to leave.
